During the last ten years we have been involved with the refurbishment of three boarding houses at Bryanston School, Blandford, Dorset. The first, won in a limited design competition, was Beechwood Boarding House, a 1960’s building which needed updating and linking in with the housemaster’s adjacent accommodation. This was completed in 2001. This was followed by the refurbishment of Greenleaves Boarding House in 2001/2002 and finally with the refurbishment of Purbeck Boarding House, completed in 2004. Greenleaves was an all girls boarding house, and the work was carried out whilst the girls continued to board.
The new front entrance to Beechwood boarding house, an all boys boarding house for fourteen year olds. We introduced more sleeping accommodation, better bathrooms and changing rooms, and a link with the housemaster’s accommodation.
The Eastern wing of the refurbished accommodation at Beechwood Boarding House was entirely new, with attic storage at Second Floor level.
The rear elevation of Beechwood Boarding House. The Arts and Crafts Movement influenced housemaster’s accommodation is facing the garden.
The front elevation of Greenleaves Boarding House. The wing at the right hand end of this picture was new, and houses the main living area and entrance. Greenleaves had originally been designed and built as a sanatorium, so the new wing reflected the detailing of the original building and the glazed covered surround was intended to have the appearance of an outdoor recreational area.
The new front entrance to Purbeck House. The building had been originally erected as a stable block, hence the cobbles in the courtyard, and it looked directly across the site from higher ground, at Bryanston House.
The entrance to Purbeck House, was through the original stable courtyard. It faced due south, and so was a sunny private outdoor area for the girls to use.
